Leaving a legacy gift FAQs

A legacy is a gift left to a person or group in your Will after you die. This can include money, specific belongings, or a share of your estate. Many people choose to leave a legacy to a charity that has personal meaning to them, helping to support a cause they care about long into the future.

Making a Will is the best way to ensure your wishes are respected and that the people and causes you care about are looked after. It gives you the freedom to choose exactly how your money, property and possessions are shared. Without a Will, the law decides who inherits—and this may not reflect what you would have wanted.

There are three main types of legacy you can leave:

  • A share of your estate – this is called a residuary legacy. The ICR will receive a share of your estate once all other beneficiaries and costs are paid.

  • A fixed sum of money – this is called a pecuniary legacy. Over time the value of this gift can be eroded by inflation.

  • A specific gift – this can include property, jewellery, shares, art or antiques.

You don’t have to tell us, but it really helps with our future planning. It also means we can thank you properly and make sure you only receive the communications you want.

To ensure your gift reaches us, please include our full name, address, and exempt reference number in your Will:

The Institute of Cancer Research
123 Old Brompton Road
London SW7 3RP

We’re an exempt charity, which means we don’t have a Charity Commission number. Instead, please use our Exempt Reference Number: X90004 when writing your gift into your Will.

Writing or updating your Will doesn’t have to be expensive. We offer a free Will service, where we connect you with one of our Will writing partners. They help you write your Will at no cost to you. You may be able to write your free Will online or with a solicitor in your local area. Learn more about the ICR's free Will service.

A gift in your Will can be one of the most significant contributions you ever make. You don’t need to be wealthy to make a difference. Every gift, large or small, helps drive our research forward.

Your legacy could turn discoveries made in the laboratory into treatments that save lives around the world by:

  • Funding cutting‑edge equipment for our scientists

  • Training the next generation of cancer researchers

  • Launching new research programmes that bring hope to patients

Whatever you choose to leave, your gift will help create better treatments, kinder care, and a brighter future for people affected by cancer.

We are very grateful for every gift left to the ICR. Each one plays a vital role in helping us drive forward life‑changing cancer research.

You are very welcome to tell us how you would like your gift to be used. However, very specific instructions can sometimes create difficulties, especially if many years pass between writing your Will and us receiving your gift. Our research priorities may have changed by then, meaning we may not be able to use the gift exactly as you intended.

To avoid this, many supporters choose wording that expresses their wishes while still giving us enough flexibility to put their gift where it will make the greatest impact.

If you are thinking about supporting a specific area of research, we’re always happy to talk this through and help you find the right wording. You can contact us at [email protected] or call 020 7153 5387.

Yes. Leaving a gift to charity in your Will can reduce the amount of inheritance tax your estate pays. Gifts to charities are completely tax‑free and are deducted from your estate before inheritance tax is calculated. Under current rules, if you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, the overall rate of inheritance tax on the rest of your estate may be reduced. Find out more.

The ICR is an exempt charity, which means we don’t need to register with the Charity Commission and therefore won’t appear on its website.

We hold this status because we are a college of the University of London and are regulated by the Office for Students, which has similar oversight powers to the Charity Commission. Our exempt charity reference number is X90004.

You can read more about exempt charities here.

We reach out to people who live near our participating solicitors and who we believe will be interested in hearing more about our free Will writing services. We do not have access to medical records, health, income or lifestyle information – this information is entirely confidential and cannot be shared – and we strictly follow the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) guidelines

As the leaflet is a form of ‘non-addressed mail’ and does not contain a name and address, we are unable to exclude you from receiving it. However, you can opt out of receiving all non-addressed mail with the Royal Mail here

If you have any further questions not answered here, or if you’re thinking about leaving a gift in your Will, please contact the Legacy Team [email protected] or call 020 7153 5387 and they will be happy to help.

Creating a free Will FAQs

We offer three ways of getting your Will for Free. To use the ICR’s Will for Free service, you must be aged 60 or older. If you are writing a mirror Will, only one person must be 60 or older. To write your free Will with the National Free Wills Network or Make a Will Online, you must be 18 years or older. Please note, some of our services aren't available in Scotland or in the south of England. If you are unsure, please fill out the National Free Wills Network form and they can let you know your eligibility or us at [email protected] or call 020 7153 5387 and we will be happy to help.

Our free Will services cover the full cost of a simple Will. If your circumstances are more complex (for example, if you have business interests, overseas assets, or want to set up a trust) you can still use the service, but any additional specialist work would be payable by you.

The solicitor will explain this after your initial meeting and let you know in advance if there are likely to be any extra costs, so you can make an informed decision.

Even if you need more than a basic Will, using our service can still help reduce the overall cost.

The ICR will pay a discounted rate to the solicitor for a simple individual or mirror Will, meaning there is no cost to you. Most Wills are simple, but if it isn't, you will be charged for any necessary additional work. The solicitor will confirm this directly with you.

No, there’s absolutely no obligation to leave a gift to the ICR when using any of our free Will‑writing services, but we would be incredibly grateful if you chose to do so.
