The library and information service supports the academic and clinical work of The Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

As a student of the ICR, you will have access to all of our electronic resources, databases and e-books. You will be issued a password for this site at registration, which will be valid for the duration of your studies.

The library on the Sutton site is open to visitors, and borrowing rights are granted to visitors from academic institutions that are a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme.

For all current students

Users of the library may access our journals and databases from anywhere by following the steps below:

  • If outside the ICR network, you will be prompted to enter your ICR username and password
  • Users without an ICR account should enter their dedicated EZproxy credentials
  • Follow the links to use the library resources.

Please contact the library if you do not have an EZproxy account.

Libraries at Chelsea and Sutton

The ICR has a library at both of our sites in Chelsea and Sutton - see contact details section below.

The physical environment at both sites provides a pleasant working space, with the opportunity for users to browse the collections and study in a quiet area. Plugs and network ports are provided for laptop use, and wireless access is available. The book catalogue can be searched online at

Once you are a student, you will be able to register with the library and arrange an indication at either site with a librarian. Books can be loaned for 4 weeks, with self-renewals available up to 6 times. The library also offers training on literature searching in relevant biomedical databases like PubMed.

There is 24-hour access to both libraries for registered users. Qualified library staff are available at the library on the Sutton campus to help with any enquiries Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. The library in Chelsea (Chester Beatty Labs) is not staffed.

The book catalogue can be searched online at Books may be requested or renewed in the following ways:

  • On the book catalogue – your reader code is the six digit number on your library card and your PIN is the last 4 digits
  • By phone or email – see contact details section below
  • In person at the Sutton library.
