Endocrine Therapy Resistance Group
Professor Johnston's group researches the mechanisms of endocrine resistance. The team identified targets within breast cancer cells, and studied novel therapies to reverse the endocrine resistance pathways.

Endocrine Therapy Resistance
Professor Stephen Johnston has worked for many years to understand endocrine resistance in hormone receptor positive breast cancer. He has led many trials investigating novel therapies to improve efficacy of current hormone treatments.

Istvan is based at the Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research, where he works to characterise resistance to endocrine therapy in breast cancer. He analyses data resulting from the application of novel technologies, such as nanopore sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, to archival blood and tissue samples obtained from clinical trials. He holds an MSc in Theoretical Physics from Utrecht University and an MSc in Bioinformatics and Theoretical Systems Biology from Imperial College London, where he stayed to pursue his PhD in Mathematics. With Prof Vahid Shahrezaei and Dr Samuel Marguerat, he studied cellular growth and resource allocation through omics data analysis and mathematical modelling. He joined the ICR in 2023.
