Freedom of speech and academic freedom at the ICR
The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) recognises the fundamental importance of freedom of speech within the law. These principles are at the heart of our mission to make the discoveries that defeat cancer — and to train the next generation of researchers through open academic enquiry and debate.
We are committed to protecting the academic freedom of our students, staff, visiting speakers, and applicants for academic posts. Everyone in our community has the right to discuss, debate, and explore a broad range of views — provided this is done lawfully and with respect for the rights and freedoms of others.
Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech
The ICR also has policies in place to protect the dignity, safety, and rights of all members of our community. These include:
- Dignity at the ICR Policy
- Prevent: Referral of Concerns
- Student Complaints Procedure
- Student Disciplinary Procedure
- Disciplinary Policy
- Equality Opportunity Policy
- Grievance Policy
