The Climb of Life beats £100,000 target

The Institute of Cancer Research, London’s annual Climb of Life fundraising event has raised a fantastic £101,260, surpassing last year’s final total and bringing the amount raised by the team over nine years to more than £650,000.

More than 120 intrepid mountain trekkers put on their hiking boots and waterproofs on 6 November and took on the challenge of conquering some of the Lake District’s highest peaks – despite the relentless showers throughout the day.

The event was organised by Graeme Chapman MBE, and included a fundraising auction and raffle, in addition to corporate support and sponsorship.

Graeme said: "In spite of very challenging conditions in the Lakeland Mountains I’m delighted that this year’s Climb of Life has beaten last year’s total and our £100,000 goal for the second time. I and my team are all looking forward to future successful events like this one, to support the ICR’s great cancer research.”

Professor Keith Jones and his wife Lucy – both of whom are keen mountain walkers and have spent much time in the Lake District – represented the ICR, at the event. Professor Jones, who is Team Leader and Deputy Dean at the ICR, said: “I was truly inspired by the enthusiasm and positive energy displayed by everyone who raised funds and took part in the event. Lucy and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the participants and talking to people from different walks of life. Well done to everyone involved for beating the £100,000 target for a second time.”

The event was generously supported by office supply industry leaders VOW/EVO Group and Office Products International (OPI).  The OPI team were this year’s top fundraisers, raising a fantastic £21,000. VOW/EVO Group, who were the winners for the last two years, were the runners-up this year with a total of £17,000.

The Swan Hotel in Grasmere once again kindly hosted the weekend’s celebrations with local businesses donating auction and raffle prizes.

The support and commitment of industry sponsors and individuals in organising and supporting the event is hugely appreciated.
