A knighthood was conferred on Dr John Ashworth for public service in the New Year Honours list.
Dr Ashworth has had a long and distinguished career. He was Deputy Chairman of The Institute of Cancer Research from 2003-2007. Prior to that he advised Prime Ministers Thatcher and Callaghan as the government's Chief Scientist from 1976-81, was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford from 1981-90, Director of the London School of Economics from 1990-96 and Chairman of The British Library from 1996-2001. Currently, he is Chairman of Barts and the London NHS Trust.
Jonathan Kipling, Secretary of The Institute, said: "We are delighted that Sir John's wide ranging contribution to cancer research and our nation has been recognised in this way."
