Professor Anthony Swerdlow, Aetiological Epidemiology team
I am investigating the causes of cancer and the long-term effects of cancer treatment for patients.
I am the principal investigator on several large epidemiological cohort studies in the UK investigating the mortality and cancer risks of groups of people according to their characteristics and potentially harmful exposures.
My research aims to find causal factors so that chronic diseases can be prevented, and so that patients and their relatives can be advised about risks associated with chronic diseases and their treatments.
The studies include case-control studies and several large cohort studies. A major focus is collaboration with geneticists in The Institute of Cancer Research.
This work aims to discover how behaviours and exposures may affect cancer risks in people and how this may vary according to their inherited predispositions.
