Dr Gurdip Bhalay's team focuses on the design and synthesis of safe and effective drugs for the treatment of cancer.
Dr Gurdip Bhalay is a member of the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit where he uses his experiences in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology to help discover new drugs and advance the science of drug discovery. He has worked at big pharma as well as contract research organisations gaining over 20 years’ experience.
Silvia joined the ICR in March 2018 as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow. Silvia studied Pharmacy at the Complutense University of Madrid, followed by a PhD in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at San Pablo CEU University, Madrid. Silvia then moved to Cyclofluidic Ltd at Biopark Welwyn Garden City working on infectious diseases for 2 years and then moved to her current position at the ICR.
Dr Vassilios Bavetsias is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research, London. He works on the design and synthesis of small molecules as cancer therapeutics.
Edgar joined the ICR in 2018 as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow. He studied undergraduate chemistry in Spain and then moved to Heidelberg for a 3 months placement in Gold catalysis with Professor Stephen Hashmi. He then moved to the University of Birmingham to carry out a MSc in Drug Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry with Dr Sam Butterworth followed by a synthetic and MedChem PhD with Dr Butterworth at the University of Manchester.
Andy joined the ICR in August 2016 as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow. Andrew studied chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, where he obtained a Masters in Chemistry with Drug Discovery. Following this, he stayed at the University of Strathclyde to complete a PhD in the area of natural product synthesis with Professor William Kerr.
Simon joined the ICR as a Higher Scientific Officer in August 2019. Simon completed his PhD at Leeds University with Professor Ron Grigg FRS. This was followed by an industrial post-doctoral position with the AstraZeneca process chemistry group in Bristol, followed by employment at Novartis and Eli Lilly. Simon has over 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and is using this knowledge to help drive projects forward.
Catherine joined the ICR as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow in June 2018. She moved from the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre at the University of Sussex where she worked as a research fellow as part of the oncology team. Catherine has a degree in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology from University College Dublin, where she stayed for her doctoral studies working on the synthesis and evaluation of lipoxin analogues for inflammatory diseases.
Adam joined ICR in the autumn of 2018 as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow. Adam graduated in 2014 from Manchester University with an MChem. Then moved to Professor Ian Paterson’s lab at Cambridge University to complete a PhD working on the total synthesis of Madeirolide A where he contributed to the asymmetric synthesis of several novel fragments. At the ICR, Adam is part of a team developing inhibitors of a novel cytidine target.
