Deputy Chief Executive elected to European Academy

Professor Paul Workman, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, has been elected as a Fellow of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences.

Gaining membership of the Academy, an independent advisory body of oncologists and cancer researchers, is a prestigious achievement. Elected by their peers, Fellows have made outstanding contributions in their field. Via the Academy, they aim to place science at the core of policies to sustainably reduce the death and suffering caused by cancer in Europe.

Professor Workman joins several other researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in the Academy, including Alan Ashworth, Mitch Dowsett, Suzanne Eccles, Mel Greaves, Stan Kaye, Chris Marshall and John Yarnold.

On being elected as a Fellow of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, Professor Workman said:

“I’m delighted and honoured to be elected by my peers to the European Academy, a group of experts that provides independent, authoritative and evidence-based advice to policy-makers which is aimed at reducing the burden of cancer in Europe.

“The Academy also plays a leading role in developing innovative partnerships between researchers which are critical to drive forward the translation of potential new treatments to the clinic for patient benefit – which is an area of particular passion for me.”

“I’m especially pleased to receive recognition for our drug discovery, molecular pharmacology and chemical biology research which has involved fantastic contributions from very many lab members, colleagues and collaborators.”
