Our efforts to promote the role of women in science have been recognised with a prestigious Athena SWAN Silver Award. This award recognises a significant record of activity and achievement in promoting gender equality, supported by evidence of the impact of Athena SWAN activities.
We first achieved a Bronze Athena SWAN Award in August 2009, and this was renewed in 2012, recognising the steps we have made in supporting the careers of female researchers.
We have put in place a series of initiatives to support female researchers at key transition points in their careers, and these are starting to have benefits in helping women into senior positions. We have undergone a process of data analysis and self-reflection, allowing us to identify and address remaining challenges, as well as the progress we have made in enhancing the opportunities available for all our female researchers.
Our award submission shows the issues that we have identified, and the action plan we are delivering to make further progress.
