Stavros Niarchos Foundation
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation was founded by Stavros S. Niarchos (1909-1996) to support and promote his vision and interest in education, social welfare, health and medicine, and arts and culture.
Since its inception in 1996, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has provided total grant commitments of over €930m through more than 2,100 grants to not-for-profit organisations operating in 95 countries.
In 2010 the Trustees of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation very kindly agreed to fund two 3-year research projects at the ICR:
- The development of the Calypso System to improve radiotherapy treatments for lung cancer patients. The Calypso System allows for a more targeted treatment to counteract patient movement, through the use of radiobeacons implanted in the cancerous organ.
- Identifying genes that drive the development of childhood glioma (a cancer of the brain), as well as genes that allow the tumour to become resistant to therapy. The aim of this research project is to develop new therapies for children with brain cancer.
