Mary Falk - QII Challenge
In October 2010 Mary Falk achieved her goal of raising a huge £100,000 for the ICR.
Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It was during her treatment that she decided to raise money for the ICR and has spent the last five years doing just that.
On Friday 8th October, Colten Care Ltd presented Mary with a cheque for £5,650, so she was able to reach her target of £100,000, “I feel hugely proud to have hit my fundraising goal. It’s taken five years to achieve it and while it has been both emotionally and physically demanding, it’s an incredible feeling to have completed such a massive challenge. I’d like to thank Colten for their fantastic donation and everyone else who has so generously donated to my cause. I am delighted that all this money has been able to go to help other people whose lives are affected by cancer.”
Mary began her fundraising shortly after completing her cancer treatment, taking part in the Petit Bateau Single-handed Channel Race Week. Over a demanding 260-mile course, Mary competed against young and fit sailors and finished an impressive second, despite the fact that she had yet to regain her full strength after debilitating cancer treatments.
Following this race, Mary took part in further Petit Bateau solo races in 2007 finishing second in the fleet, and the following year she achieve first in her class in Channel Week.
In 2009 Mary was forced to put a temporary stop on her racing while recovering from a badly broken leg but was back again this year when she successfully completed the 1800-mile two-handed Round Britain & Ireland Race, which she followed with a gruelling week's solo racing in the English Channel.
After five years of hard work and incredible dedication Mary has hit her target and raised an amazing £100,000 for the ICR. Mary’s strength and determination has been an inspiration, and she has shown that there can be life after breast cancer, and a very full life at that.
