Recommended Legacy Clauses
We would be delighted if you could support our work by leaving a gift in your Will to The Institute of Cancer Research. We would be grateful if you could give these notes to your Solicitor or Will writer to ensure that the gift is made correctly.
Legacies left simply to ‘cancer research’ result in confusion and unnecessary administrative work as the legacy is not effective without reference to the Treasury Solicitor for direction. It may also mean that the gift is allocated to another charity.
If you would like to leave a gift in your Will to The Institute of Cancer Research, we suggest using the following wording, as appropriate: (Though your solicitor will make any modifications necessary to ensure conformity to the rest of your Will).
Residuary legacy: I give all [or specify share] of the residue of my real and personal estate to The Institute of Cancer Research of 123, Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RP (X 90004) and the receipt of the Legacy Officer or other proper officer for the time being shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
Pecuniary legacy: I give the sum of £ ____ to The Institute of Cancer Research of 123, Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RP (X 90004) and the receipt of the Legacy Officer or other proper officer for the time being shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
Please consider index linking pecuniary legacies in order to preserve their value for the future. In such cases, the clause should read:
I give The Institute of Cancer Research of 123, Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RP (X 90004) the sum of £ or such larger sum as my Executors calculate to have the same value at my death as the figure specified had at the date of this Will and the receipt of the Legacy Officer or other proper officer for the time being shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
