Student Bursary Programme
The vision of the ICR is that people may live their lives free from the fear of cancer as a life-threatening disease. Yet this can only happen if research continues to make groundbreaking progress. One of our key objectives is the training of the next generation of scientists.
A college of the University of London, the ICR has had a remarkable record of success in retaining its reputation as a premier training ground for young cancer researchers, with the results of the Government's latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) providing a welcome endorsement of the quality of our research.
Every year the ICR commits to funding the training of 15 to 20 new PhD students. These students receive advanced scientific training at the leading edge of cancer research, care and treatment, guided by a faculty of world-class academic scientists and researchers.
The Student Bursary Programme exists to support a selection of named students enrolled here, helping to ensure that we continue to give the world the best in science, scientists and cancer treatments.
The ICR: A success story
Professor Nazneen Rahman completed her PhD in Molecular Genetics at the ICR before going on to finish her training as a doctor and geneticist. She now heads the ICR’s Section of Cancer Genetics and is also a Clinical Consultant Geneticist, leading research into the genetic causes of breast and childhood cancers as well as undertaking clinical work and teaching commitments.
“The ICR is an excellent place to undertake a PhD. It provides the opportunity to learn and consolidate the basic foundations of scientific research as well as the inspiration of seeing how these have been used by researchers at the ICR to make important and innovative advances in cancer research.”
- Professor Nazneen Rahman
