Therapeutic Ultrasound Team

Team Leader: Dr Gail ter Haar

Location: Royal Marsden, Sutton

Section: Joint Department of Physics

Team Leader

GR ter Haar PhDDSc

Technical Staff

Dr Ian Rivens

Ian graduated from the Physics Department of Imperial College before completing his PhD in Therapeutic Ultrasound at The Institute of Cancer Research. He is current a Staff Scientist having been employed since 1994. He is a state registered Clinical Scientist and a founding Board member of the International Society of Therapeutic Ultrasound.

Ian has worked on translational research, starting his PhD studies in the laboratory, and worked on all aspects of development up to and including Phase I (safety) and Phase II (efficacy) clinical trials. He is also interested in magnetic resonance imaging guided therapy directed at tumour blood supply.

Dr Yixin Ma

Yixin graduated in Industrial Instrumentation and Automation (1993, North China University of Technology), M.E (1996) and PhD (1999) from Tianjin University, China. After 1.5 years post-doctoral in Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, she joined Leeds University (2001 - 20004) as a Research Fellow to develop a high performance two/multiphase flow meter using Electrical Impedance Tomography techniques.

Yixin is currently an Electronic Engineering Research Fellow responsible for building a new HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) System. Research interests include therapeutic ultrasound system design, process control and monitoring, therapeutic ultrasound equipment calibration, two/multi-phase flow measurement, Process Tomography techniques, etc.

Dr Paul Godden

Paul completed his PhD in fluid mechanics in 2000, and then worked in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital as a medical technical officer for three years. He then further consolidated his interests in medical practice and quantitative science at the Clinical Operational Research Unit of University College London as a research fellow. He spent two years at CORU, working on a project based in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Paul joined The Institute in 2005, working on a project to mathematically model the complex acoustic field generated from HIFU phased arrays.
