Clinical Radiotherapy Physics (Fulham Group)
Location: Royal Marsden, London
Section: Joint Department of Physics
Senior TRUST Lead: Miss Margaret Bidmead
The clinical research and development focus of the Clinical Radiotherapy Physics team at London is directed towards improving image guided, conformal radiotherapy, whilst utilizing modern technology.
Specific projects include:
- The use of a wide-bore radiotherapy CT scanner and virtual simulation for improved imaging for radiotherapy
- The use of 4D MRI and CT imaging
- The use of surface and internal organ monitoring to provide information for gating the linear accelerators, to allow better organ at risk sparing and better conformity to the tumour volumes
- Methods of organ motion modelling
- Implementation of new algorithms into the Eclipse treatment planning system for photon and electron dose calculations.
- Techniques for treatment verification with electronic portal imaging and transit dosimetry
- Techniques to treat early stage prostate cancer with interstitial implantation, including CT, US and MRI based dosimetry.
- Implementation of IMRT for treatment of sarcomas and gynaecological malignancies
- Clinical implementation within controlled trials
