SIOP WT 2001 clinical trial
All new Wilms tumours presenting in the UK since 2002 have been entered for treatment on the SIOP WT 2001 protocol. This randomized trial is testing the question of whether doxorubicin, a potentially cardiotoxic drug, is necessary in the post-operative treatment of stage II and III, intermediate risk histology tumours. Other tumour stages and histological risk groups are treated on single arm protocols that are also linked to ongoing biological studies.
The UK is unique amongst participating countries in that prior to 4 weeks preoperative chemotherapy, percutaneous cutting needle biopsies are taken to confirm diagnosis made by imaging. All such biopsy and subsequent nephrectomy samples are collected, flash frozen and registered with the UKCCSG tumour bank. Our lab is the lead UK centre for carrying out biological studies relating to outcome in the SIOP WT 2001 clinical trial.
