Environmental Factors in Prostate Cancer

Human Biomonitoring and Carcinogen Activation

Section: Section of Molecular Carcinogenesis

Differences in the incidence of prostate cancer among different migrant populations point to causative agents of dietary and/or environmental origin. We have previously shown that primary cultures of prostate cells can activate members of two classes of environmental carcinogens. The expression of genes that encode xenobiotic metabolising enzymes responsible for their activation and detoxification in prostate cells and tissue are being investigated, in order to define the metabolic capability of the human prostate and to determine the role that such agents might play in the aetiology of prostate cancer. Cellular localisation of the proteins is also being visualised by immunohistochemistry.
