Section of Epidemiology
Chairman: Professor Anthony Swerdlow
The Section of Epidemiology is involved in studies of the aetiology of childhood and adult cancers, cancer genetics, cancer screening, industrial epidemiology (and cancer treatment trials). There is a particular focus on breast cancer, but also substantial work on several other cancers including brain tumours, leukaemia, cervical and testicular cancers and mesothelioma. Several large long-term cohort studies are being conducted within the Section, as well as many case-control studies and other investigations. The Cancer Screening Evaluation Unit conducts studies on the efficacy of screening for cancer, especially of the breast, cervix, colorectum and prostate; this includes large-scale, long-term trials of screening for cancer in sites where it is not yet of proven benefit, evaluation of existing screening programmes, and development of evaluation methods. Our genetic studies are carried out in collaboration with the Section of Cancer Genetics and the RMT/ICR Academic Department of Biochemistry. Several of our studies are conducted in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where Professor Peto holds a joint appointment and Professor Swerdlow is a Visiting Professor.
