Academic Department of Biochemistry
Chairman: Professor Mitch Dowsett
The research of the Academic Department of Biochemistry focuses on biochemical and molecular studies of breast cancer, particularly in relation to hormonal and biomarker aspects. The aim of the Department is to use molecular/hormonal analyses to better understand the dependence of breast cancer on oestrogens and to apply new treatment approaches. These objectives are delivered by close collaboration with clinical members of The Royal Marsden Hospital’s Breast Unit, with scientists in The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre, and with other prominent research groups worldwide. Studies range from the epidemiological, involving hormonal analyses in many thousands of apparently healthy women, to detailed trials of small numbers of patients with advanced breast cancer. Collection of tissues from some of the largest breast cancer trials worldwide allow the molecular findings to be applied to material of immediate clinical relevance. These clinical studies are complemented in areas of particular interest by work in model systems by our cell signalling team.
