New Anticancer Compounds Discovered

31 Aug 2006 - The Institute of Cancer Research has made significant progress in its joint anticancer drug discovery collaboration with Cancer Research Technology and Sareum Holdings. A series of novel compounds are now being developed which have shown promising results in cancer cell models.

Announced in July 2005, the collaboration has discovered molecules that target a key biochemical pathway responsible for reducing the effectiveness of traditional cancer drugs. The team is now working towards developing its most promising compounds in order to take one forward into human trials. It is hoped that the potential new drugs will allow the treatment of tumours that respond poorly to traditional therapies, as well as being used at lower dosages than current medications, thereby reducing side effects.

The Research is being conducted within The Institute through its Cancer Research UK Centre for Cancer Therapeutics, led by Professor Paul Workman.
