The ICR features in BBC documentary Horizon

The BBC has turned a spotlight on the groundbreaking work of the ICR and its partner hospital The Royal Marsden in an episode of the award-winning documentary series Horizon.



The programme followed three patients undergoing state-of-the-art treatment at The Royal Marsden, including the life-extending skin cancer drug vemurafenib, robotic radiotherapy tool Cyberknife and the Da Vinci S surgical robot for prostate cancer.



The episode also included interviews with three key ICR scientists, explaining some of the research behind these innovations.



Professor Nazneen Rahman describes how genetic mutations can trigger cancer and her work hunting down these faulty genes.

Professor Richard Marais details efforts to understand the biology of cancer and in particular the role of the mutant BRAF gene in the development of malignant melanoma.

Professor Paul Workman explains his world-leading team’s high-tech, creative approach to discovering and developing innovative new drugs based on these molecular faults.

The hour-long episode “Horizon: Defeating Cancer” received very positive critical reviews when it first aired on Tuesday 10 April and is available to view until April 17 on www.bbc.co.uk/horizon.
