Statement in response to the government announcement of extra resources for prostate cancer

Wednesday 6 September 2000

The Institute of Cancer Research welcomes today's announcement of extra funding for prostate cancer research as a crucial step in the right direction in the fight against prostate cancer.

The Institute has been campaigning for many years for an increase in funding for prostate cancer research, and through its everyman campaign has raised valuable funding to build the UK's first dedicated male cancer research centre which is due to be opened later this year.

Professor Alan Horwich, of the new Male Cancer Research Centre, said today: " We are delighted that the government is responding so vigorously to the cancer charities and patient groups who have been campaigning for extra funds for prostate cancer. It is a disease which has been severely under-funded and overlooked for too long. Today's announcement is a step in the right direction in our fight against the disease."

The Male Cancer Research Centre is due to be opened later this year at The Institute's site in Sutton, Surrey and will carry out the most comprehensive programme of prostate cancer research in Europe focussing the research of 14 dedicated teams.
