A
website providing a basic introduction to some important skills

Much of the research that goes on at The Institute of Cancer Research is multidisciplinary
in nature, offering students intensive biomedical training
and equipping them for a variety of careers in medicine, medical
physics, cellular and molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology
and medicinal chemistry. In addition to carrying out their
research activities per se, students need to be able
to present their work at meetings and conferences, both in
oral and poster presentations, manage their time and prioritise
tasks effectively.
Historically, the Joint Department of Physics has provided new
students with a short but intensive course - called the Introductory
Lecture Programme - covering a variety of Study Skills. The course
is designed to help students get the most out of their time at the ICR and develop skills that they can utilise throughout their
careers. The course is aimed not just at physics students but at
students of all disciplines. At the request of the Physics Dept,
the IEU has developed the Study Skills website based around the
topics covered on the Introductory Lecture Programme. Topics include:
- Organising laboratory books/computer files/papers
- Time management
- Preparing and presenting a research seminar
- Keeping abreast of/searching the literature
- Writing a paper
- Writing a thesis
- Intellectual property - protection and exploitation
- Critical reading of a scientific paper
- The ICR's Workshop
- The facilities of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust
Photography Department
Lecturers from the original course have worked with the IEU to
develop content for the Study Skills website.
