July 2009

"The specific nature of pain control within oncology is unique - pain is a complicated symptom and engenders huge anxiety in patients and in staff treating it."

Senior Occupational Therapist, London

The management of pain remains a problematic area in the care of the cancer patient. While significant advances in pain management have been made, several factors can prevent the provision of the best palliative care. These include misconceptions and myths about opioids and the reluctance of patients to comply with treatment and report their pain.

Pain management feasibility study

We carried out a feasibility study in 2003 to explore whether it would be viable to develop an educational CD ROM for healthcare professionals on the management of pain in cancer.

Interactive program a useful resource

The feasibility study revealed a need for further information and education on pain management in cancer, and that an interactive CD ROM program would be a useful way of providing this. The program is similar in scope and concept to A Breath of Fresh Air, the CD ROM program for healthcare professionals on the management of breathlessness previously developed by the IEU.

The CD ROM has now been developed as an educational tool to help improve patient care through the dissemination of information and holistic management. It was launched in the UK and in the USA in Spring 2008. Visit the program structure section to find out more about the contents and structure.
