The sites reviewed here provide excellent information on childhood
cancers
written for adults. Captain Chemo, an interactive educational
computer game that can be found on the website of the Royal Marsden
Hospital, is a site giving childhood cancer information FOR children.
A young patient called Ben de Garis first designed Captain Chemo,
a bold cartoon character who is captain of a spacecraft. Ben realised
from the research he did into his own disease that there was a considerable
lack of information aimed at children and teenagers with cancer.
This prompted him to create a Captain Chemo cartoon strip as a way
of conveying information to young people. Ben died of cancer a couple
of years ago, but his idea has been developed further by the Royal
Marsden in partnership with Gameplay's specialist multi-media division
- DoUno.com.
Captain Chemo is a fun and positive way for children to learn more
about cancer and treatment. Participants follow Captain Chemo and
his motley crew, who are all named after cancer treatments, on a
journey through the body to seek out and destroy cancer cells. Progress
through the game is made by answering questions about cancer and
playing in a number of shooting games that aim to destroy a tumour.
There are links to the Royal Marsden information pages so children
can find the answers to any questions they are unsure of. The game
is colourful and action-packed enough to inspire and entertain children,
with a subtle educational aspect that aims to reassure and motivate
individuals in their fight against the disease.
