Cancerbackup: Cervix (new window)

Reviewed May 2005

Cancerbackup was launched in 1985 by Dr Vicky Clement-Jones, herself a cancer patient at the time. She realised that there was a need for high quality and up-to-date information, practical advice and support for cancer patients, their families and friends. The result is a free cancer information service staffed by qualified and experienced cancer nurses that offers publications on all aspects of cancer. These are written specifically for patients and their families. There are also a number of CancerBACUP local centres in hospitals around the country, also staffed by specialist cancer nurses.

The Cancerbackup website provides a focal point for much of the information provided by the CancerBACUP organisation and allows access to a range of publications. The website features comprehensive information on a wide range of cancers and, while you can find out about many cancer topics, this review focuses on cervical cancer specifically.

Within the cervical cancer section of the website there is general information (new window) that introduces the cervix and discusses the development of cervical cancers. There is also a section covering causes and diagnosis (new window) of the disease that provides a similar short page, illustrated summaries of symptoms, types of cervical cancers and staging and grading of the disease. These are all easily accessible from the front menu page and also from an expanding menu bar that is present throughout, located on the left hand side of the page.

Treatment sections are divided into two. One discusses types of treatment (new window) and provides details about surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; the other is called after treatment (new window) and discusses follow-up and related issues such as sex life and fertility.

The information within all of these pages is comprehensive and easy to follow, and utilises pictures to break up the text and illustrate key information. There are a couple of additional links on the right hand side of each page that takes the user to common questions and answers on that particular topic or to related information pages.

Other areas that are covered in detail within the site are:

And a related section that deals with the process and outcomes of cervical screening (new window).
