Microscopic level

Inside newly formed blood vessels, white blood cells can pass easily through the vessel walls. The white blood cells stick to the endothelium and migrate outside the blood vessel, where they interact with other intercellular proteins, causing inflammation and ultimately bone and cartilage breakdown.
