Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy
The Academic Dean, Professor Alan Horwich
The ICR’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy 2009-12 seeks to enable The ICR to make a major contribution to the education and training of the next generation of cancer researchers. It covers both its research degrees and taught course programmes.
The Strategy aims to:
- further develop and enhance The ICR's research degrees programme
- consolidate and where possible expand The ICR's portfolio of postgraduate taught degrees
- provide excellent support for learning and teaching, including through the exploitation of IT
- develop and exploit both existing and new interactions and partnerships with other appropriate organisations in the field of cancer research and education
- promote student and staff volunteering, community interaction and public communication of science
- provide effective and efficient support services at the forefront of academic administration.
The means by which we will implement the Strategy include an effective research student recruitment procedure; enhancing the personal and professional training provided to students and to Faculty; evaluating the adequacy of our support to students; the introduction of a new assessment policy for taught courses; an in-depth review of the MSc Oncology course once the first cohort have graduated; a comprehensive e-learning strategy; strong partnerships with the Royal Marsden and other institutions; work to encourage young people into science careers; the promotion of equality and diversity, and efficient and flexible academic support services.
The Strategy will be implemented and monitored via annual Operational and Quality Assurance Plans, overseen by the Academic Board.
