Staff development

The Institute of Cancer Research is committed to the personal development of its staff. In addition to the training and support provided within individual teams, the Learning and Development Team provide a variety of resources to assist individuals with personal development.

These resources include a range of workshop courses in interpersonal skills, management development and information technology skills, as well as a number of training programmes that are available via the web, all outlined in the training brochure. The ICR was awarded the HR Excellence in Research Award for its commitment to supporting researcher career development.

The ICR has an appraisal system designed to enable staff to engage in a constructive dialogue with their manager on their development, career progression and aspirations. Half-day workshops, focused specifically on career development, are available and aim to assist individuals with planning their careers, whether at the ICR or more broadly.

Further training courses are available through our partners, including the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

The support departments at the ICR (Corporate Services) have been recognised as meeting Investors in People (IIP) standards, an award we have held since 2008. This external accreditation provides the ICR with a means of identifying how effectively it is managing, communicating with, and developing its staff.

The feedback from the IIP assessment, together with the results of a staff attitude survey of all staff and students, helps staff and their representatives to develop an action plan ensuring that the ICR remains a great place to develop a career while undertaking or supporting world class science.
