Sustainability and the Environment
Our mission is to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. In support of this, we are acutely aware of the importance of promoting protection of the environment. Our commitment is described in our Environmental Policy and our Statement of Health, Safety & Environment Policy. We have a number of initiatives to support this commitment co-ordinated by our Facilities team and supported by a team of volunteer Environmental Champions.
Our main focus at present is on the implementation of an Environmental Management System and reduction of CO2 emissions. In November 2011 we successfully achieved the Ecocampus Gold and Platinum awards and now have a robust Environmental Management System in place.
ICR is one of the very first HEIs to achieve this award which is equivalent to the ISO 14001 standard. We have also successfully completed our Carbon Management Plan in conjunction with the Carbon Trust. Details of our current energy usage and Energy Policy are contained in the ICR Annual Energy Report 2010.
We are committed to reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill and have recently completed a project to review all aspects of our waste management. We are also in the process of implementing our Green Travel Plan. The ICR also has a Sustainable Purchasing Policy.
Through our participation in the Ecocampus Project and membership of EAUC and the London Universities Environment Group (LUEG) we are able to co-ordinate our environmental management in collaboration with other universities.
