Equality and Diversity

The ICR is one of the world’s foremost independent cancer research organisations and our mission reflects our pursuit of excellence in the fight against cancer. Underpinning and driving our mission is a set of values, which include equity, accountability and integrity, the absence of which would seriously hamper our ability to realise our vision that people may live their lives free from the fear of cancer as a life-threatening disease.

We recruit the best people from the international market which results in a high proportion of staff and students from overseas and from a range of backgrounds making the ICR’s workforce very diverse, and we take care to ensure that we apply our values towards creating a non-limiting and fully inclusive environment for staff and students to achieve their organisational and personal goals.

Our Equal Opportunities Policy Statement provides a foundation for a range of initiatives directed towards supporting the work of the ICR and in particular our Race Equality Policy, Disability Equality Scheme and Gender Equality Scheme outline in detail the steps we are taking to promote equality, and eliminate any discriminatory practice within the ICR.

Our progress on equality issues reflects our pursuit of excellence in all our other work which means going beyond minimum expectations in a range of initiatives. This includes charter membership of the Athena SWAN Charter for Women in Science and steps including support and adjustments for disabled students and staff, and a trained network of independent harassment advisers. Within the ICR, these activities are taken forward through our Equality Excellence programme which combines our equality initiatives and highlights how they support the scientific work of the ICR.
